About
the tracks: For most of the tracks, I recorded Lead and Rhythm Guitars
over sequenced instruments/drums. Some newer tracks have recorded
Keyboards, but not always. I'll try to point out what's recorded in the
track descriptions.
The sequenced instruments you hear (usually Bass, Drums, and Keys) is just a midi that I've setup to back me up. Sometimes the midi is linked
to some higher quality instrument patches found in Propellerhead Reason.
I'm not sure about the release dates of songs from 2004 - early 2006. I'll try to keep track of the release dates from now on.
Videogame Arrangements
My goal in
these tracks is to add a bit of my own style into the songs. If my version of the song doesn't sound better than the original, than I hope the arrangement makes up for it.
Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage - Maximum Carnage
September 2008. This song is played at the title screen. I
entered this into DoD September 2008 Superhero Month (as an alt entry).
Everything is played live except for the drums and bass. This is the first time I used a drum program called "Addictive Drums". This song is more of a cover than an arrangement. Original midi was sequenced by Stockman.
Final Fantasy VII - Reunion
January 2008. This song is played near the end of the game inside the crater. I entered this into DoD December 2007 / January 2008 Free Month (Tied at 35th Place).
Everything is played live except for the drums and bass. This was one of my older unreleased tracks that I was planning to polish up, but never did.
Castlevania Chronicles - The Tower of Cursed Dolls
October 2007. This is a remake of a game that was only released in Japan called Akumajou Dracula X68000. This track is played on stage 6-2 and is originally called "The Tower of Dolls". I entered this song into DoD's October 2007 Castlevania Month (10th Place). The guitars are played live, but everything else is sequenced. This track is remastered slightly better than the previous DoD version, but I think I made the rhythm guitars a little too quiet. This is also the first track I've made using a program called Reason for instrument patches.
Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge - The Fallen Warriors
August 2006. This
is an arrangement of pretty much the main theme of the game. There are many variations of it, but this version is the one that plays in the credits (it plays while showing you all of the STs you have defeated). I entered this song into DoD's August 2006 Free Month (Tied at 11th Place). Everything is played live except for the drums and bass. This is the first time I used Drumkit from Hell's EZDrummer. This was also the first time I recorded 2 rhythm guitars tracks for a fuller sound (I wish I knew about that earlier...).
Namco X Capcom - Brave New World
May 2006. This is the opening song to Namco X Capcom which is originally called "Subarashiki Shin Sekai" (roughly translates to "Wonderful New World"). I entered this song into DoD's May 2006 Free Month (14th Place). Everything is played live except for the drums and bass. This is the first time I transcribed and arranged an entire song by ear. Thanks to Malice X who helped me figure out some of the notes.
Ninja Gaiden 2 - A Long Way to Go
May 2006. This is the ending credits song to Ninja Gaiden 2. I entered this song into DoD's May 2006 Free Month (alt entry). I actually completed this around January so this is my first videogame rearrangement. Again, everything is played live except the bass, drums, and part of the intro.
Older Videogame Covers
Here are some of my very first videogame covers. As expected, they sound pretty bad. My goal was to mostly try to sound as much like the original version as possible.
Guilty Gear XX - Suck a Sage
Summer 2005. This is Chipp Zanuff's theme. I
knew I couldn't reproduce the guitar solo in the 2nd half so I ending
up writing my first guitar solo. I also sequenced an organ solo at the
end. You can hear that my 1st guitar is starting to sound pretty bad at this point.
Guilty Gear XX - The Midnight Carnival
Late 2004. This is the Final Boss's (Ino's) theme. Lots of fuzz. Bad quality. The rhythm guitars were really tough at the time.
Guilty Gear XX - Blue Water Blue Sky
Late 2004. This is May's theme. I made a techno/trance like intro for this in FruityLoops. A fun and easy song I surprisingly still know how to play.
MGS2 Substance - Solid Snake Pro Skater
Late 2004. This song plays when you play the skateboarding minigame (PS2 version only). I think this is the first time I tried using my ears to figure out the notes in a song. (I couldn't find a tab of the guitar solo).
Guilty Gear XX - Momentary Life
Late 2004. This is Baiken's theme (My favorite character in the game!). This track was surprisingly hard to play at the time. I should've practiced more before recording.
Guilty Gear XX - Holy Orders (Be Just or Be Dead)
Early 2004. This is Ky Kiske's theme. At the time, I
couldn't find many "GGXX" midis, but I did find lots of "GGX"
midis. Since I wanted to do the GGXX version, I had to edit the GGX midi into the "GGXX" versions myself which wasn't too hard, but hard at the time due to my limited knowledge on midi sequencing. The lead keys sound terrible (I recorded them too loud).
Ninja Gaiden 2 - Castle Demonic
Early 2004. Rock cover... I was curious how something like this would sound if I played all the tracks (even the bass) with electric guitar. Listenable.
Band&Artist Covers
Sonata Arctica - 8th Commandment
Early 2006. Sequenced vocals. I wanted to cover a song by Sonata Arctica (one of my favorite bands at the time) and this was the easiest song I could find. I
had alot of trouble trying to figure out how to play the sweeps so I didn't bother playing them at all.
Warmen - Somebody's Watching Me (Rockwell cover)
Early 2006. Karaoke version. I played everything except the drums.
SteppenWolf - Born to Be Wild
Late 2005. Karaoke Version. I've always wanted to play this song. I also added in a basic ending (the original fades out).
Carlos Santana - Smooth
2004. I only played the lead guitar on this. Sloppy playing especially towards the end. One of my dad's favorite songs.
FLCL (The Pillows) - Ride on Shooting Star
Early
2004. This is the
ending theme to an anime called Furi Kuri/Fooly Cooly. I played the poorly sequenced melody for the vocals (it was in the midi) with the guitar as well. One of my first
recordings.
Others
Ring Tone - Jitters
Early 2006. Rock cover. RingTone - Jitters (Original)
Working on
I've begun work on a few songs for a little remixing project that I've had in mind for a long while now, but I still haven't decided if I'm going to go through with it yet. I guess it all depends if I'm satisfied with results I'm getting... More on that next time.
Working on a few songs for The Dwelling of Duels competitions.
